Bookmen Stacks: A Stylish Addition to the Warehouse District
Rising nine stories high and located at 345 N 6th Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55401, Bookmen Stacks offers a stylish aesthetic that is noticeably different from many of its neighbors in the North Loop neighborhood. Delivered in 2005, the gray concrete building with its wide swaths of glass and interesting geometric shapes was designed by James Dayton, a noted Minneapolis-based architect who mentored under famed modernist Frank Gehry. Dayton also remodeled the next-door Bookmen Lofts, a historic former warehouse. Large steel letters spelling out “Stacks” protrude from the exterior in vertical fashion. It’s a clever play not only on the cubist-inspired design, but also an old British tradition of referring to high-rise residential buildings as stacks of flats, or stacked flats.
There is an appealing variety to the condo residences at Bookmen Stacks, with one, two, and three-bedroom layouts, some of which also have bonus dens. While there are some prototypical warehouse vibes such as concrete floors, ceilings, and exposed overhead ductwork, you’ll also discover fascinating modernist and brutalist elements as well. Examples include huge concrete beams and wall accents, often set at pronounced angles. Loft-inspired bedrooms or bonus rooms are sometimes semi-open to adjoining spaces, and giant window walls offer stunning skyline views while also inviting the outdoors inside.
Kitchens at Bookmen Stacks juxtapose chic modern minimalism and practical functionality, often set entirely against one wall in the European style. Cubist cabinetry, upscale stainless steel appliances, mosaic backsplashes, and white Silestone counters are complemented by stylish prep and dining islands with hanging pendant lighting overhead. Bathrooms are designed in a similar manner, with elements such as vessel sinks on top of white stone vanity tops, frameless showers, and deep soaking tubs. All units have front-loading washers and dryers, and almost all have private outdoor spaces of some kind, ranging from large and boxy balconies to the massive decks belonging to select penthouses.
For a boutique building with just 45 units, Bookmen Stacks provides a thoughtfully curated list of amenities for its residents. It starts, naturally enough, at the ground level with a gallery-style lobby that was recently remodeled by Dwelling Designs, with exhibits from local photographers. At the top level is a community room, and an expansive fitness center with synthetic rubber matting, cardio and strength training equipment, and massive wraparound window was gazing out over the city. The rooftop deck is the perfect place for socializing with a professional quality gas grille, an enclosed glass fireplace, stylish lounge furniture, and spectacular views. Secure garage parking is shared with sister building Bookmen Lofts.

The North Loop Community Experience
Named for its location along an early 20th century streetcar loop, the North Loop community is a former warehouse district that has found new vitality in the modern era. Described in Forbes Magazine as “One of America’s Best Hipster Neighborhoods,” this urban Minneapolis community is known for its top restaurants, boutique retailers, art galleries, hiking trails, live music, and fun pubs and taprooms. Bookmen Lofts is mere blocks from Target Field and Target Center, home to the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Timberwolves respectively, as well as top concert events. The neighborhood is also commuter friendly with major roadways like I-94 and I-394, as well as the nearby Target Field light rail station
