Lenox Brownstones: A Stunning Combination of History and Modern Luxury

Located at 519, 521, 533, and 525 S 9th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55404, Lenox Brownstones is a series of four connected rowhouses in the South Ninth Street Historic District. Originally built in 1895, the distinctive brick structures with their Beaux-Arts Revival design and prominent front bays were completely renovated and transformed into 24 condos in 2004. The intensive process including raising the entire building in order to construct a parking garage below. While surviving historic brownstone rowhouses are relatively common in places like Chicago, Washington, DC and New York City, they are quite rare in the downtown Minneapolis area. The residences at Lenox Brownstones are mostly two-bedroom, with soaring ceilings, and a wonderful blend of vintage charm and modern luxury. Other historic condo buildings in Elliot Park include Sexton Lofts and Rappahannock Flats.

The gut renovation of these century-old rowhouses resulted in two-bedroom condos at each level. The linear floorplans include sunny three-window bays in front and outdoor decks to the rear. Gleaming hardwood floors and open living/dining areas are complemented by exposed brick walls and overhead ductwork. The chef-inspired open kitchens feature stone counters, handsome cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances. There is typically a primary bedroom with ensuite bath, a second generously sized bedroom, a full hallway bath, and a laundry room. The inclusion of a modern and heated underground parking garage is both a welcome and unusual touch for a landmark historic building. While it’s common to find remodels by individual owners, these roomy residences with their 14-foot ceilings and original brick walls were impressive upon their completion in 2004 and have continued to be highly sought after since that time.

One of the calling cards at the Lenox Brownstones are their status as historic rowhouses with modern updates. As such, the building doesn’t offer the same amount of amenities as some of the luxury high-rises in Elliot Park. However, there are still some nice perks at this landmark property. Residents enjoy their own terraces, gas fireplaces, and the luxury and convenience of nice-sized in-unit laundry rooms with side-by-side machines and extra storage space. As mentioned earlier, a large, heated parking garage was created by raising the entire structure and excavating the ground beneath. The Elliot Park Community

Similar to the nearby Rappahannock Flats building, Lenox Brownstones is part of the South Ninth Street Historic District. This is a collection of late 19th century red brick buildings, typically designed in various Revival styles of the period such as Beaux-Arts, Romanesque, and Classical. The Lenox Brownstones consists of a series of semi-connected three-story rowhouses with four separate front entries. This part of the downtown Minneapolis area is known as Elliot Park, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Once home to the wealthy elite, the community was named for Joseph Elliot, a prominent physician who donated a large portion of farmland to Minneapolis. The similarly named Elliot Park and Recreation Center is just a few blocks away, as is the Commons and other local greenspaces. This is a terrific area for the arts, culture, dining, and sports. Local pubs and restaurants include Tavola (right across the street) Prohibition Bar, Hen House Eatery, Band Box Diner, Normandy Kitchen and many more. Sports fans will appreciate U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, just a few blocks away. Also in the area is Target Center (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Target Field (Minnesota Twins). The Mississippi River and its many riverfront attractions is less than a mile east.
