SoHo Lofts
Located at 718 N Washington Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55401, SoHo Lofts is a mixed-use building with commercial tenants at the lower levels, with 24 condo residences up above. The building’s backstory dates back to the 1920s and the Johnson Nut Company. Founder J. Clifford Johnson had a droll sense of marketing, advertising his product as “sane nuts” and sending glass display cases to retailers with the idea that “attractively displayed salted nuts” would increase sales by 300 percent! Johnson Nut left the building in the 1950s and was replaced by various other tenants before the loft conversion in 2007. Other historic loft buildings in North Loop include Harvester Lofts, Tower Lofts, and Security Warehouse Lofts.
While J. Clifford Johnson advertised his nuts with catchy slogans, the redevelopment of the old warehouse also included a clever sense of branding, naming the new condominium project SoHo Lofts and referencing the idea of classic New York-style loft living in Minneapolis’s fast-growing North Loop neighborhood. The one and two-bedroom units with their ample floor space certainly achieve the NYC postindustrial ethos with soaring ceilings, overhead ductwork and pipes, and exposed brick walls that are sometimes further defined with raw concrete accents. Fun bonus spaces such as dens and alcoves work nicely as reading nooks or work-from-home offices, and some units also have weathered wood wall treatments and built-ins. The open gourmet kitchens feature all the requisite bells and whistles for foodie culture, combining utilitarian design with chef-grade appliances and Silestone counters. You’ll find the same sense of rustic yet fashionable design in the bathrooms, using contrasting materials such as aged wood, ceramics, and steel. The SoHo influences are more than catch-phrases, the interior designs here really are reminiscent of the NYC arts lofts movement of decades past.
Originally built in 1922, the six-level SoHo Lofts building is unique in the North Loop neighborhood in that there is more commercial space than there are residences. Floors five and six are devoted to the large and arts-inspired condos, with the first four stories used as commercial space ranging from intimate office spaces to sprawling suites that can be as large as 14,000 square feet. A notable tenant is Casey’s Cocktails, a mobile mixologist and catering service that also offers hands-on lessons on crafting classic and contemporary cocktails. SoHo Lofts is a pet-friendly condominium, just around the corner from the North Loop Dog Park/Off-Leash Play Area. Residents also enjoy the convenience of extra-large storage pens, and heated garage parking. This is a vibrant part of town with lots of nearby bars, coffeehouses, restaurants, and other attractions including Borough, FREMNT Coffee, Bar La Grassa, The Freehouse, and Bunker’s Music Bar & Grill.

North Loop: A Neighborhood’s Evolution
Named for a long-ago streetcar route, North Loop is a community that has come full circle over time. Once home to wholesalers, distributors, and manufacturers, the old blue collar neighborhood was served not only by trolleys for workers and residents, but also by a network of rail lines and train yards for the business community’s freight needs. The SoHo Lofts building was originally home to the Johnson Nut Company, with trains stopping behind the property so that large quantities of peanuts, almonds, walnuts, cashews, and pistachios could be loaded on and off the boxcars. These days, the commuter-friendly community is served by busses, light rail, and the I-94 and I-394. While local attractions once favored saloons, pool halls, and vaudeville, today’s North Loop offers hipster bars and restaurants, art galleries, live music, and major league sports at the nearby Target Field and Target Center. It’s the story of a community that once thrived, suffered an eventual fall from grace, and was reinvented again as one of the region’s most popular urban residential neighborhoods.
