Washburn Lofts For Sale & Lease

Washburn Lofts | Mill District

Located in the historic Mill District, these upscale converted lofts are some of Minneapolis' most coveted places to live. Built in the early 20th century, in what was the flour production capital of the world, the building was once home to a radio station, and the Betty Crocker Kitchen. Bought by the city in 1992, the Washburn Crosby Utility Building (as it was then known) was transformed into high-end residential housing and the Mill City Museum. The redevelopment was part of an effort to revitalize the riverfront area. This 8 story, luxury high-rise building contains 22 unique units all built with custom floor plans to take advantage of the expansive vantage points that came with each. Ranging from 1,400-to 8,762 square feet, these spacious residences offer modern styling while preserving the charming character of this historic building like the exposed brick and masonry.

More About Washburn Lofts

Designed by Hewitt & Brown and completed in 1914, the limestone brick structure at 700 S 2nd Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401 was initially known as the Washburn-Crosby Utility Building and later became the first Betty Crocker Test Kitchen. Vacated in 1965, damaged by fire in 1991, and purchased by the city in 1992, it was ultimately redeveloped as Washburn Lofts in 2002 as part of the city’s waterfront revitalization. Sharing a wall with the Mill City Museum, the project by LHB and Paul Madson & Associates added a mezzanine level and created 22 condo units, including a premier 7,845-square-foot showcase residence. Its blend of historic and modern elements earned the 2003 Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Award and the AIA MN Honor Award. Other notable historic conversions in the superblock include North Star Lofts and Whitney Landmark Residences.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Washburn Lofts is home to some of the region’s most spectacular urban loft-style residences. A remodeled penthouse with 4,400 square feet of living space and a 3,000-square-foot roof deck set a record in 2022 for the highest condo sale in Minnesota history at $6,999,000. Layouts range from one to three bedrooms, often with bonus dens for home offices or guest rooms. Signature features include 14-foot concrete ceilings with beams, stone pillars, and massive multi-paned windows offering stunning views of the Mississippi River and Stone Arch Bridge.

Many units have been remodeled by top architects and designers. Flooring varies from exotic hardwoods to polished concrete or tile. Common features include exposed ductwork, long-hanging lamps, original brick accents, and open gourmet kitchens with stone counters and high-end stainless appliances. Western- and northern-facing units offer generous balconies, while penthouses boast expansive private terraces. Residents enjoy a stylish lobby, a community room with fireplace, dining and lounge areas, a community kitchen, a fitness center, and a rooftop patio with planters and lounge seating. The pet-friendly building also provides heated garage parking, guest parking, and storage lockers.
