IMS Lofts: Merging History, Design, and Modern Living

Located at 290 Market Street, Minneapolis, MN 55405, IMS Lofts occupies the top eight floors of the North Tower at International Market Square. Designed by George Bertrand & John Chamberlain, the five-building complex was built in stages between 1904 and 1915. Early modernist influences are evidenced by jutting cubist sections, further embellished by fretwork friezes and fluted Doric columns. The buildings were originally home to the Northwestern Knitting Company which subsequently reincorporated as Munsingwear Clothing, the world’s largest underwear manufacturer. Today, International Market Square is the region’s largest interior design marketplace, with IMS Lofts representing the residential pinnacle of the property. Other well-known loft conversions in the North Loop neighborhood include Itasca Lofts, Herschel Lofts, and Bookmen Lofts.

Condos at IMS Lofts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from one to three bedrooms. Many of the units also feature dens which can be either enclosed or semi-open. Loft-inspired bedrooms and dens often feature clerestory interior windows toward the top of a wall, along with either French or sliding doors. These superb residences capture a perfect blend of industrial-chic and modern luxury design influences, with beautiful hardwood floors, high concrete ceilings, exposed brick accents, and huge factory windows that gaze out over the Minneapolis cityscape below. Chef-inspired kitchens with stone counters and stainless steel appliances are open to the adjacent living and dining areas. Designer bathrooms, custom closets, and in-unit washers and dryers add to the appeal, and many of the residences also have private terraces.

It is not surprising that residences at IMS Lofts boast such stylish interiors. These condos on floors 4-12 of the North Tower are, in fact, representative of the overall ethos of International Market Square which has long been home to innovative pioneers in design. This cornerstone of the midwestern creative corridor houses numerous interior designers, and more than a few have had a hand in shaping or remodeling upstairs residences over the years. Condo owners at IMS Lofts enjoy heated garage parking as well as extra surface parking for guests, plus storage lockers, 24-hour security, and free internet. The pet-friendly building has grassy areas on the property and is just a block from larger greenspaces and a pond. Foodies will appreciate the fact that the Minneapolis Farmers Market is across the street.

IMS Lofts at the Edge of the Loop

The historic IMS complex was built in stages between 1904 and 1915. The North Tower (home to the condos) was completed in 1905. The historic former clothing factory was constructed during an era when local streetcar lines looped around the warehouse district, resulting in the North Loop neighborhood name. The IMS Lofts are located toward the western edge of “The Loop,” and are also associated with the Sumner-Glenwood area. The nearby I-94 and I-394 add to commuter convenience, along today’s version of the old rail lines: Target Field Station with Metro Blue Line and Metro Green Line light rail as well as the Northstar Commuter Rail. Sports fans will appreciate that Target Field and Target Center, home to the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Timberwolves respectively, are about six blocks away.
