Itasca Lofts: An Enduring Forerunner of the North Loop Scene

The official address of Itasca Lofts is 708 N 1st Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401. That said, actual residences can have differing addresses, from 702 to 716 N 1st St. This is due to the fact that what appears to be one large structure is actually five conjoined warehouses. The interior of Itasca Lofts delivers yet more quirks in the byzantine journey of a historic time capsule, with unique and creatively inspired uses of space. Take for instance a multilevel penthouse that was actually constructed inside an old elevator shaft! Other historic warehouse conversions in the North Loop neighborhood include Bookmen Lofts, Harvester Lofts, and Tower Lofts.

It is worth remembering that Itasca Lofts blazed a new trail when it was converted to condos back in 1981. Originally designed by Franklin B. Long and Frederick G Kees and completed in 1886, the former warehouses had long been abandoned by the time Kit Richardson came up with an audacious plan. The prominent Minnesota architect was inspired by a trend in older urban cities that saw artists turning decrepit warehouses and factories into loft spaces. Richardson, who later became a founding partner in Schafer Richardson, envisioned a revitalized North Loop neighborhood, and Itasca Lofts soon became the guiding light.

Residences at Itasca Lofts embody the shapeshifting nature of modern loft living, including countless creative touches along the way. Here, you can find condos that run the gamut from very recently remodeled to those that haven’t changed much since the 80’s conversion. Regardless, there are often commonalities such as soaring wood ceilings, heavy timber beams, and glorious wood floors. Exposed brick walls contrast nicely with the wood surroundings, further accentuated by deep-set arched windows that invite the natural light inside. Handsome kitchens are completely open to the main living areas, with stone counters and wood cabinetry. Many of the units have rear-facing private balconies that look out toward the river.

Variety really is the spice of life at this historic warehouse complex, with condos ranging from one to three bedrooms and from around 750 to nearly 3,000 square feet of living space. Select multistory penthouses have floating spiral stairs leading to private roof decks. A large and handsome lobby welcomes residents to Itasca Lofts, and some commercial spaces are below street level. Unique catwalk-style hallways serve to access some units, accented by glass brick skylights. Residents also enjoy a fitness center, as well as heated garage parking. Onsite businesses include the In The Loop Coffee Shop, and the very popular Acme Comedy Company. The pet-friendly building is close to the Mississippi Walking Trail, as well as local greenspaces and dog parks.
