Explore Whitney Square in the Heart of North Loop

Located at 210 N 2nd Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401, Whitney Square is a historic loft conversion with retail and office spaces at the ground floor and 32 spacious condo units across the upper levels. Named for its architect, William Channing Whitney, the property with its Classical Revival style was built in 1897 and was originally home to the Minneapolis Iron Store Company, selling blacksmiths’ and wagonmakers’ tools and supplies. It later housed the Industrial Lighting Supply Company. Renovated in 1987, the five-story brick building is a contributing member of the Minneapolis Warehouse historic District and is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places, giving it added significance. Other historic loft condominiums in the neighborhood include Security Warehouse Lofts, Herschel Lofts, and Itasca Lofts.

Whitney Square was one of the early examples of North Loop’s renaissance, following decades of steady urban decline. The project’s gut rehab made great use of the building’s heavy wooden beams, not only in the residences themselves but also in the hallways where raw timbers form a network of catwalks that gaze down upon the main level. The one and two-bedroom condos are quite large, with open space layouts complemented by hardwood floors, soaring wooden ceilings, exposed brick walls, tall arched windows, and overhead ductwork. Condos come in both one and two-bedroom models, with large and open layouts. The handsome kitchens are completely open to the main living areas with a minimalist modern vibe. In many cases there are stairs leading up to classic loft bedrooms or dens, with walls that are partially open to the living areas below. Nicely designed baths, in-unit washers and dryers, and lots of interior closet and storage space add to the appeal.

While Whitney Square is the name of the entire mixed-use the building at 210 N 2nd Street, the upstairs condo units are sometimes referred to as Whitney Square Lofts. There may not be as many luxury amenities as some newer residential buildings, but residents do enjoy assigned covered parking. The location for the pet-friendly condo community is also a huge plus, right in the heart of North Loop’s shopping and dining scene. Filigree Jewelry, specializing in vintage/estate and custom modern jewelry, is one of the building’s street level businesses. The upscale Parc Shop clothing boutique is right next door, as is Demi, a new restaurant from James Beard Award-winning chef Gavin Kaysen. Dog parks, walking trails, and the Mississippi River are nearby.

North Loop’s Trendy Appeal

Named for a long ago streetcar route, North Loop rose to prominence as a blue collar manufacturing and wholesaling hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Buildings like Whitney Square were cornerstones of the neighborhood. The passage of time eventually led to urban decline as commercial businesses either closed their doors or moved out to the suburbs. Interestingly, this small corner of Minneapolis became so unnoticed and forgotten that it largely escaped the type of large-scale redevelopment that often gives way to new glittering high-rises.  Sturdy brick buildings remained standing and vacant. These ultimately became North Loop’s modern day calling card as old warehouses were renovated and transformed into appealing loft residences, much like other parts of the country like New York City. Described in Forbes Magazine as “one of America’s Best Hipster Neighborhoods,” today’s North Loop is once again flourishing. Residents enjoy a lively arts and entertainment scene, sidewalk cafes, sports bars, fun little shops, fitness and yoga studios, and even music and comedy clubs. Whitley Square is close to Whole Foods, a farmers market, Target Field and Target Center for sports and concerts, and light rail transit.
